“There’s no need for a little dog to be so enthusiastic, but Mom still doesn’t want to see the baby and a man sleep in the same room!”
“I could be a hot water bottle instead.”
“Someone as young and strong can lie on the ground all night without shivering; it’s also convenient for keeping watch.”
“Don’t turn off the live stream, Ai Qing! I want to be the night watchman for my wife! If he dares to cross the line, I’ll… cry at the screen!”
“So…” Ash paused a few moments, his eyes shining like green pine forests. “Is that okay?”
Yan Chuan was momentarily taken aback by his gaze.
After thinking for a while, he finally spoke, “Are you talking about sleeping at night?”
Ash nodded vigorously.
“I can warm you up!” He was like a big, enthusiastic dog, trying to let Yan Chuan know his worth. “I can even stoke the fire at night!”
It was indeed a bit cold at night, especially with the temperature dropping due to the rain.
Yan Chuan then recalled what Duncan had said to him earlier.
“Fine…” he pressed his lips, hesitating for a moment before nodding.
Yan Chuan was also a little worried about what might happen at night.
Maybe it would be better to sleep with Ash…?
He considered this as he nodded towards Ash and opened the door to enter together.
There were still many travelers in the inn, all of whose identities were temporarily shrouded in mystery.
Of course, Ash was one of those employees.
This young man was managing an inn in the Misty Mountain Forest with him, an Asian owner.
Yan Chuan pursed his lips.
However, Ash was his employee and, for now, seemed to be on his side.
Thinking this, he turned on the gas lamp in the bedroom.
The inn could probably be categorized into four types of people.
One group was Yan Chuan and Ash, as the owner and employee of the inn.
Another was Duncan and his subordinates, who had stirred things up as soon as they came in, making everyone alert.
A third group consisted of Brandon and Berkeley—one a police officer on a business trip, and the other a botanist gathering research materials. The former had police duties in the script, while the latter, equipped with a medical kit, served a supportive role.
Finally, the last group was middle-aged couples with children, as well as a pair of young lovers.
They moved quickly, and it was hard to tell if they had any special professions, but Yan Chuan remained vigilant.
It was somewhat unusual for couples to appear in this abandoned gold mine forest, especially with a child.
The child.
Yan Chuan entered several scripts, and this was the first child he had seen, appearing as an important character.
Generally speaking, escape scripts don’t choose children as contestants; in scripts, their appearance as NPCs often indicates they could be significant characters.
Yan Chuan recalled what the little boy in the white navy suit did in the afternoon.
He looked to be about seven or eight years old, mischievous and restless like children his age, not wanting to stay by his mother’s side.
When Yan Chuan first arrived, that little boy was squatting outside, watching Ash fix someone’s car.
There was nothing suspicious about them; among the three of them, the boozy father seemed most suspect.
He had even overheard the red-faced middle-aged man mumbling something about hell and demons while Ash was delivering dinner.
Yan Chuan snapped back to reality, his gaze landing on the only single bed in the room.
It was just the first day of the script; apart from gathering some general information, he hadn’t encountered any useful clues.
However, Ash was very attentive.
Duncan had constantly defended Yan Chuan while speaking, dutifully airing grievances about Brandon.
Yan Chuan decided to temporarily trust Ash.
Moreover, if the rain wasn’t too heavy tomorrow, he wanted to see if he could head to the nearby town with Ash.
This was for the upcoming plot points and also to restock the food in the inn.
Though there was quite a bit of food, many travelers were staying in the inn.
“Come here,” Yan Chuan turned to the young man with the somewhat dull expression in his green eyes, saying, “Let’s rest early.”
He opened the cabinet and pulled out two thicker blankets.
The night forest had become foggy, and the rain had started to patter down, causing a sharp drop in temperature.
Yan Chuan was slightly afraid of the cold; the room had a fireplace, but it didn’t provide much warmth, so it was always best to cover up more.
After being called by Yan Chuan, Ash stared blankly as he helped to fix the bed, then approached slowly as if just realizing.
“You agreed…?” Ash had picked up a corner of the quilt and still seemed a bit incredulous. “Really?”
He was such a tall guy with long legs; if judged by looks alone, he had quite a presence, resembling someone with a slightly cold expression. Yet, Ash always seemed a bit daft in front of Yan Chuan, his expression looking rather blank.
So when he got an answer and was already making the bed, Ash still asked this question.
Yan Chuan nodded.
The bedroom only had one bed.
It was a single bed, but wide enough for two people to sleep together.
However, Ash was much taller than him; it would probably be uncomfortable to squeeze together in one bed.
“Yes,” the pretty black-haired Asian thought for a moment and then asked Ash, “But with only one bed, do you think it will be cramped? Should we move a bed from next door?”
For cleaning convenience and to avoid dampness, the inn used light wooden beds that were easy to move around.
Yan Chuan himself didn’t mind that much; he slept well and usually woke up in the same position. He wasn’t sure about Ash.
Adopting a concerned employer attitude, Yan Chuan reminded Ash first.
“My sleeping posture should be decent,” Ash said with a slight furrow of his delicate brows as he thought. “But I am a bit colder; I wonder if you mind.”
