Before heading downstairs, the young Asian proprietor changed into a slightly loose outfit that revealed her delicate collarbone and graceful neck. As she tilted her head down, the enticing lines of her slender neck became evident.
“I have a question to ask…” Although the young police officer seemed prepared to say something, he averted his gaze and stumbled over his words, “I want to contact the police station to inform them about the case in Misty Mountain Forest, but I found that the signal here is very weak…”
Brandon composed himself, cleared his throat, and asked a question that concerned him.
“Is there a telephone in the inn?”
He finally looked up and met the Asian shopkeeper’s pair of dark, tranquil eyes that shimmered with a hint of moisture. Yet, Yan Chuan shook his head.
“There is a telephone that can reach the next town,” he explained, “but the signal in the forest is not good; it gets worse when it rains.”
So they couldn’t even make a call until the rain stopped, let alone leave. Yan Chuan, feeling complex emotions, fiddled with the basket containing the bread. He initially wanted to see if Brandon, as a police officer, could connect with the outside world.
Having said that, Brandon could only nod.
“I understand, alright…” Although the news was disappointing, he forced a smile. “Thank you for your trouble.”
Yan Chuan shook his head.
“Well, I’ll take my leave now.” He picked up the basket and turned to leave Brandon’s room, leaving him alone, deep in thought.
Ahsu had disappeared somewhere.
The hallway was empty, so Yan Chuan had to knock on each door in order to inquire.
“Knock, knock.” He continued with the same method and knocked on the next door.
The person inside asked a question, likely because, after the events of the afternoon, the guests had become wary of each other.
“It’s me,” Yan Chuan raised his voice slightly, “dinner is ready.”
The door opened in response.
Inside stood the botanist with dark, curly hair, a thick notebook spread open on the table.
He seemed to be working just now, still wearing his single eyeglass, gripping a few slightly yellowed newspapers. Upon seeing Yan Chuan, he set the items down leisurely.
However, he had already taken off his Berkeley jacket, and a few buttons were unfastened.
The cuffs of his shirt were rolled up, revealing prominent veins on his wrists and slightly bulging muscles.
Berkeley claimed to be a botanist and appeared quite scholarly. He was slender, but once he took off his clothes, it was evident that he had a good physique.
Yan Chuan thought for a moment.
Since Berkeley often had to work in the field for research, his physical form must be quite fit.
Meeting Berkeley’s eyes concealed behind the lens, Yan Chuan lifted the basket he held.
“Did Ahsu bring you soup?” The young Asian proprietor handed the bread to Berkeley. “Has he been here?”
Berkeley nodded.
His voice was low, sounding somewhat hoarse, perhaps due to being too engrossed in his research. “He has been here.”
Yan Chuan felt relieved since Ahsu had already visited.
He nodded and greeted Berkeley before leaving.
But Yan Chuan still didn’t see Ahsu in the hallway.
He wondered if their timings had just missed each other, but it was also possible that Ahsu was busy explaining something to the guests.
Not thinking much of it, Yan Chuan casually knocked on the next door.
The door swung open immediately.
Probably Ahsu had already delivered soup to this room; Yan Chuan didn’t think twice and pointed to the basket he was holding.
“There’s some bread and jerky here,” Yan Chuan counted the remaining amount. “It’s dinner time, and you can have it along with the soup…”
Before Yan Chuan could lift his head to see whose room this was, his forearm was suddenly yanked, and the door behind him closed shut.
The sound of the door closing was abrupt, startling Yan Chuan, but by the time he reacted, he was already pulled into the room.
Two tall men stood beside him like bodyguards.
Just like that, Yan Chuan was brought inside.
Holding the bread basket, he met the gaze of the man in front of him with deep blue eyes.
It was Duncan.
The young man who had exchanged trivial words with Yan Chuan earlier was seated with a bottle of opened wine on the table, dark liquid swaying in the stemmed glass.
With a hint of mockery in his eyes, Duncan asked, glancing at the pretty Asian who instinctively tightened her grip on the bread basket.
“Are you the little girl delivering bread?”
【The little girl with the basket, also known as ‘I’m happy my wife brings me meals’】
【Ew, bad man, don’t always look at my wife like that, it’s really inappropriate】
【Wife doesn’t like your fierce look, did you hear that? Don’t scowl every day!】
【Ah, why don’t you offer me some food? Are you waiting for your wife to come before asking?】
Yan Chuan pressed his lips together.
Duncan’s words were clearly laced with malicious intent as he glanced at the basket in Yan Chuan’s arms, asking if she was the one delivering bread.
His henchmen had directly pulled him in, and it was without a doubt Duncan’s orders.
Yan Chuan hugged the basket tighter.
“No,” he firmly denied Duncan’s practice of referring to him as a little girl. “I’m here to deliver dinner; if you don’t want it, I’ll leave.”
On the table were opened bottles of wine and other food, but there was no corn chowder or vegetable soup made by Ahsu.
Yan Chuan understood; Ahsu had either not come to this room yet or Duncan and his group already had food and rejected what was offered.
Duncan’s gaze seemed to weigh down on him; this self-proclaimed gentleman always looked at Yan Chuan in a very direct manner, which felt quite impolite.
Yan Chuan caught a whiff of the wine’s scent.
Since they didn’t need the inn’s food, why had they pulled him in?
