They sat on the ground, gathering in the open grassy area, the stench of decaying raw flesh wafting toward them from afar.
Ahi Bern furrowed his brow and said, “Lord Alje, please arrange for ten of the more severely ill patients to come over. I will treat them first.”
Upon hearing this, Alje immediately went to make arrangements. Soon, men carrying ten individuals—whose limbs and skin had entirely rotted away—laid them before Ahi Bern.
Painful moans invaded the air. Ahi Bern’s expression remained calm as he moved among the ten, beginning to chant a divine incantation. Golden light spilled down from the sky, and the process lasted a full half-hour.
When Ahi Bern opened his eyes to examine the patients, their flesh had completely regrown, but it retained a dark, purplish hue, visibly decaying once more at a remarkable speed.
“Woo woo woo,” someone broke down and cried out, “Your Holiness, please save us, it hurts so much.”
Alje, watching from a distance, expressed his concern, “Your Holiness, is it possible that you cannot heal them?”
Shuai Chang, protected by his combat aura and shielded from infection, approached Ahi Bern to observe the patients closely.
“The toxins remain,” Shuai Chang stated.
Ahi Bern, confused, replied, “Our Light Healing Technique can cure all injuries caused by dark forces. Why can’t it cure these people?”
Shuai Chang suggested, “Perhaps they do not contain dark energy within them.”
Ahi Bern suddenly understood, “I can’t believe I didn’t consider that possibility.”
He knelt down without hesitation and grasped the rotting hands of the patients, channeling the power of light into their bodies.
In stark contrast to the pure black of dark energy, the patients’ insides were a murky gray, and the blood within their flesh had turned a pale gray.
Ahi Bern attempted to draw the gray material into his own body; as a child of the God of Light, he feared no evil, and the only thing on this continent that could cause his death was himself.
To his surprise, the results were quite good. The patients’ flesh gradually returned to a normal color. By the time the gray matter was completely absorbed by Ahi Bern, the patients’ decay had ceased.
The gray matter was quickly purified by the holy light within him, disappearing without a trace.
Ahi Bern extracted all the gray material from ten patients and then released a healing spell. Besides their malnourished state from pain and unable to eat, the patients were completely healed.
The ten patients knelt on the ground in excitement, thanking Ahi Bern profusely.
Alje sent the ten patients home, but a middle-aged woman was unwilling to leave: “Lord Mayor, my son is still here. I need to stay and take care of him.”
Alje replied, “With His Holiness here, you need not worry about your son experiencing any accidents. Hurry back home. In less than a month, all the patients here will be healed and able to return. Just await your son at home; there is no need to worry about him lacking care here.”
The middle-aged woman looked at Ahi Bern, who nodded, “I will heal everyone here.”
After the ten patients left, Shuai Chang saw that Ahi Bern wanted to continue healing and advised, “Even if you’re anxious, you must take care of your health. Those impurities have been absorbed into your body; you may feel fine now, but who knows if accumulating too much might cause issues later. Think of everyone else waiting for your help; if something were to happen to you, they would all perish.”
Alje added, “The knight is right, Your Holiness. How about we heal ten in the morning and another ten in the afternoon?”
Ahi Bern nodded helplessly, “For now, that will have to do. The conditions of those ten were too severe, consuming this much time.”
They did not return to the town for lunch, but casually ate some dry rations there.
Ahi Bern had just finished eating when he was about to continue when Shuai Chang stopped him: “Let me use my aura to check your body.”
Ahi Bern stood obediently as Shuai Chang pressed his forehead against Ahi Bern’s. Before him were Ahi Bern’s long, thick eyelashes, and beneath them flowed two pools of light green water; Shuai Chang closed his eyes, focusing on examining Ahi Bern’s health.
Everything turned out normal; the power of light within Ahi Bern was dense and viscous, impervious to any filth.
Shuai Chang opened his eyes, and Ahi Bern knew he had completed his examination, nervously blinking, “I’m okay, right?”
Shuai Chang stepped back, leaving a faint red mark on Ahi Bern’s forehead. He gently rubbed the spot: “You’re fine. Let’s go; I’ll accompany you.”
That afternoon, Ahi Bern healed fifteen patients. At this rate, they would be able to cure all the residents of Kane Town afflicted by the illness in about ten days.
That evening, upon returning to their lodgings, Shuai Chang shared his suspicions with Ahi Bern.
Ahi Bern frowned, “I’ve never heard of an apothecary being able to create poison; isn’t medicine meant to help alleviate pain?”
Shuai Chang patted his hand, “On Hews Continent, there are kind-hearted people like you, but there are certainly malicious bad people as well. Perhaps that apothecary is one of the bad ones, specializing in concocting poisons to harm others.”
“Such people are truly wicked!” Ahi Bern said angrily. “Oston, we must go to the water source now; I need to check if the water is contaminated.”
Shuai Chang had previously inquired with Alje about the areas where infected individuals lived; most resided in the west and south. They decided to start checking the wells in those two regions.
To avoid causing panic, they did not inform anyone, and Shuai Chang found a set of dark clothing. Once Ahi Bern changed into it, he lost a bit of the lofty purity, but his stunning beauty remained dazzlingly apparent.
This person specifically pointed to Shuai Chang.
Ahi Bern tugged at his sleeve and shook it lightly: “Oston, don’t dawdle; let’s go.”
Shuai Chang pursed his lips and took the lead outside.
He didn’t want to perform intimate acts with Ahi Bern while using Oston’s body, despite his intense desire for the man before him.
Ahi Bern was a mage and could not physically compare to Oston; it didn’t take long before he was panting heavily.
Shuai Chang wrapped his arm around him to prevent Ahi Bern from falling over. Ahi Bern gasped for breath, a faint blush appearing on his already fair face under the moonlight.
