“Our son can’t possibly be unattractive. You must be tired; get some sleep first. We’ll go home tomorrow.”
Mother Zhou, feeling exhausted from waiting at the hospital until nine o’clock, decided to go home and come back early the next morning. She wanted to take Zhou Chengyun with her, but he stubbornly clung to the bedpost. “I want to see my little brother.” His teacup-colored eyes flashed with determination, and his lips puckered as if he could hang an oil bottle.
Mother Zhou let go of him. “Fine, if you don’t want to go back, you can stay here, but you’re not allowed to make trouble for your father.”
“Chengyun is very well-behaved!” Zhou Chengyun exclaimed angrily, insisting he wouldn’t cause any trouble.
“The more I treat you well, the more temper you have,” Mother Zhou shook her head and left.
“Uncle Deng, when can my brother come out?” After seeing Mother Zhou leave, Zhou Chengyun sat on a chair and asked Deng Jie.
Deng Jie replied, “He’ll definitely be born before ten o’clock, so you don’t need to worry.”
“Does Chengyun really love his brother? Are you not afraid that he will take away Daddy?” Deng Jie joked.
“Daddy loves me, and I love my brother,” Zhou Chengyun said proudly. “My brother’s name is Chengxing; I picked it.” He couldn’t help but show off.
Deng Jie was surprised: “It seems like your brother is very favored; even your grandmother waited in the hospital for a whole day for him.”
Zhou Chengyun wrinkled his little nose. “Daddy said Grandma also waited for a whole day when Chengyun was born, and only left after I was born. Grandma left before Chengxing was born; she doesn’t love him as much as she loves Chengyun.”
Six years ago, when medical technology wasn’t as advanced, it was impossible to determine whether the twins in the womb were boys or girls. Mother Zhou was full of anticipation as she waited in the hospital for an entire day, only to be frustrated when Wei Yanze delivered twin boys and returned home in anger.
Just as Deng Jie was about to say something else, Wei Yanze was rolled back in. He was already exhausted and asleep, while a nurse placed the baby next to him.
Seeing this, Zhou Chengyun immediately jumped off the chair and ran to the bed, carefully peeking over the edge to see his brother.
However, the baby was tightly wrapped in a swaddling blanket, and even when he tried hard to tiptoe, he couldn’t see.
Shuai Chang walked over and picked up Zhou Chengyun, sitting him on his lap so he could see his brother.
Zhou Chengyun was so excited he couldn’t sit still; his little body was wiggling, and he waved his hands in delight as he quietly spoke to the sleeping baby, “Brother, I’m your big brother.”
He turned to Shuai Chang and said, “Daddy, both brother and Daddy are sleeping.”
Shuai Chang asked, “Are you tired, Chengyun? Why aren’t you going back with Grandma?”
Zhou Chengyun smiled and said, “I’m waiting for my brother to be born before going back; I like my brother more than Grandma does.”
Shuai Chang said, “Chengxing has Chengyun’s love, so he must be very happy.”
“Let’s go, you’ve seen your brother now. Daddy will take you home to sleep first, and tomorrow when you get back from school, you can see Daddy and your brother at home.”
Hearing this, Zhou Chengyun hugged Shuai Chang’s neck and rubbed against him, yawning, “Okay.”
“Deng Jie, the baby supplies are in the cupboard; keep an eye on them. I’ll take Chengyun home and come back right away.”
Deng Jie nodded, “I’ve prepared both warm water and cool boiled water. I’ll make the milk powder for the baby soon. I’ve taken care of many newborns, so you can be assured.”
After taking care of Zhou Chengyun at home, Shuai Chang quickly returned to the hospital. As he reached the door of the ward, he heard the loud cries of a baby inside. He pushed the door open to find Deng Jie was holding the baby, trying to fit the pacifier into the baby’s mouth.
Fortunately, Wei Yanze was still in deep sleep and wasn’t disturbed.
“I’ll give it a try,” Shuai Chang said, carefully taking the baby from Deng Jie, adjusting his position, and bringing the bottle to the baby’s lips bit by bit.
At first, the baby would push the pacifier out with his tongue, but after tasting the milk, he began sucking it.
His little mouth was skillful and strong, and before long, half the bottle was emptied, and the baby closed his eyes to sleep again.
Holding this little life in his arms, Shuai Chang felt a flood of tenderness.
Deng Jie took the empty bottle to rinse with cold water and then scalded it with hot water.
Shuai Chang gently placed the baby beside Wei Yanze and told Deng Jie, “You should go home and pack some clean clothes; we’ll move here tomorrow. I’ll send you the address on WeChat shortly.”
“Mr. Zhou, I won’t go home tonight; someone needs to be here for diaper changes and everything else.”
Shuai Chang waved his hand and said, “No need, I’ve called a night shift nurse for help. You need to rest well at night so you can have the energy to work during the day.”
