Zhou Chengyun said, “This is the first gift Grandma has given me, so I want to keep it safe and write about it in my diary to show my teacher.”
Although Zhou’s mother didn’t like Zhou Chengyun, hearing how much the child cared warmed her heart, and the gentleness she feigned became much more genuine.
After they finished their meal, Shuai Chang took Zhou Chengyun back to their room to do his homework. Zhou Chengyun opened the box with his small hands, revealing a beautifully crafted jade pendant strung on a red thread.
Shuai Chang took it and placed it around Zhou Chengyun’s neck, asking, “Do you like it?”
Zhou Chengyun touched the pendant with fondness and nodded loudly, “I like it!”
“Grandma is really good to you. When I was little, she never gave me gifts,” Shuai Chang pretended to be sad.
Zhou Chengyun took him seriously. With a reluctant hand on the jade pendant, he took it off and handed it to Shuai Chang, saying, “Daddy, here. I’ll give you Grandma’s gift.”
Shuai Chang: “…” How can there be such a kind little angel in this world?
Of course, Shuai Chang couldn’t accept it. He put the pendant back on Zhou Chengyun, saying, “This is Grandma’s intention, you should cherish it. When you earn money, you can buy gifts for Daddy.”
“Okay! I want to make a lot of money in the future to buy gifts for Daddy, Papa, my little brother, Uncle, and Grandma!”
Shuai Chang watched Zhou Chengyun finish his homework and then read him a story to help him sleep. Once Zhou Chengyun fell asleep, he got up to drive to the hospital.
“Mrs. Zhou got up once in the middle to go to the bathroom, and then she slept through,” Deng Jie reported a few points about the care for pregnant women to Shuai Chang, and he noted them down one by one.
“Deng Jie, thank you for your hard work today.”
Deng Jie waved her hand, “Mr. Zhou, you are too polite. Mrs. Zhou is very gentle and doesn’t make things difficult for me. Caring for her here is quite easy.”
Before leaving, Deng Jie said, “Mrs. Zhou seems to really enjoy the meals I make. I will prepare some at home and bring them over tomorrow morning.”
“Thank you.” Shuai Chang sent her to the door, watched her leave, and then turned back into the ward.
He remembered to have his assistant increase Deng Jie’s salary by two thousand, after all, dedicated caretakers like her were not common.
Shuai Chang climbed into bed, hugging Wei Yanze from behind to sleep. In the early hours, he felt Wei Yanze stir, quickly turning on the light. “Yanze, what’s wrong?”
Wei Yanze’s face was flushed, and he stammered, “Zhen Ting, I want to go to the bathroom.”
Shuai Chang quickly carried him there. After Wei Yanze relieved himself, he sighed in relief. When he woke up, Shuai Chang was sleeping soundly after taking care of him all day. Wei Yanze, not wanting to wake him, tried to hold it, but finally, he couldn’t help but move his legs, unintentionally waking Shuai Chang.
“Zhen Ting, I’m sorry for waking you up so early,” he said, feeling guilty.
Shuai Chang replied earnestly, “What are you talking about? You’ve been carrying my child for eight months. I’m only keeping an eye on you for two days; how can that be considered hard work? Next time, please wake me up in time. You and the baby are very important to me, and I don’t want you both to suffer.”
Wei Yanze’s eyes welled with tears, touched: “Zhen Ting…”
“Alright, go back to sleep for a while.” Shuai Chang carefully helped him lie down in bed. “Is your leg cramping? Let me massage it for you.”
Shuai Chang gently rubbed Wei Yanze’s swollen, cramping calf. Wei Yanze relaxed, soon drifting off in Shuai Chang’s embrace.
After staying in the hospital for a week, the doctor announced that Wei Yanze could be discharged.
Deng Jie reluctantly said, “I really get along well with Mrs. Zhou. I wonder if I can come to visit after the baby is born?”
Shuai Chang replied warmly, “You are very welcome to.”
He thought about inviting Deng Jie to their home to continue being a caretaker after the baby’s birth. With just over a month left, it was good to prepare early.
He escorted Deng Jie to the hospital door. “Deng Jie, I have a slight request; I hope it’s possible to bring it up.”
Deng Jie responded, “Mr. Zhou, please go ahead.”
“My wife will give birth in a little over a month and will need care afterward. Can you make time in September?”
Deng Jie smiled and said, “Of course! I get along so well with Mrs. Zhou. It’s my honor to have an employer like her. Just have Yue Lin contact me when the time comes.”
Shuai Chang was in a great mood, having secured a reliable caretaker for Wei Yanze.
He transferred Wei Yanze to a wheelchair and pushed him out of the hospital.
Once they were in the car, Wei Yanze asked, “What’s making you so happy?”
“There are good things coming your way; it’s a surprise for you.” Shuai Chang enjoyed the conversation with Deng Jie and wanted to keep it as a surprise.
When they arrived home, Shuai Chang pushed Wei Yanze inside. Zhou’s mother was sitting on the sofa watching a TV drama. When Wei Yanze entered, he called out “Mom,” but Zhou’s mother didn’t even glance up and just lightly said, “You’re back.”
Wei Yanze had long gotten used to her tone. Shuai Chang reassuringly squeezed his hand and said to Zhou’s mother, “Mom, your eldest grandson is back; don’t you want to say hello?”
Upon hearing this, Zhou’s mother raised her hand, “Bring him over.”
Shuai Chang pushed Wei Yanze closer, and Zhou’s mother’s expression brightened as she began talking to Wei Yanze’s large belly, saying things like “good grandson” and “sweetheart,” words flowing easily from her lips.
Shuai Chang felt a twinge in his heart: “Mom, you are being too dramatic. You can’t take care of this baby when he arrives; if you did, he’d turn into a little troublemaker for sure.”
Wei Yanze remarked, “Zhen Ting, Mom just likes children; she isn’t being that serious.”
Zhou’s mother pouted in response: “That’s right, she’s not as sensible as your wife, who teaches me every day.”
Mother-in-law and daughter-in-law often unite against a common target because of a man’s words.
Shuai Chang surrendered, “Fine, it’s all my fault. You both are right; I’ll never argue again.”
