Gu Chen remained unresponsive. “Understood.”
Even if he were heading toward death, Gu Chen was dressed very formally, as if he was about to attend a grand banquet.
Throughout the ride, Gu Chen gazed outside, his thoughts in disarray. He pondered many things yet felt he wasn’t thinking at all. Once they arrived, he sat dumbfounded in the car until Ye Qiu called him a couple of times, and he realized they had reached their destination.
The car slowly came to a stop in a sparsely populated garden.
The gentle May breeze brushed against his hair as it swept through the tranquil courtyard. The captivating scenery before him, however, did nothing to lift his spirits.
“You’ve really gone through a lot…” Gu Chen self-deprecated, feeling ridiculous that even as he faced death, someone had gone to the trouble of picking a lucky site for him. He truly was dealing with someone who knew how to put on airs.
“Son!”
Was that his mother’s voice?
Hearing the familiar call caused Gu Chen’s body to stiffen momentarily, unable to move.
In an instant, Gu Cheng wondered if he was missing his family and imagining things.
Looking around, he saw no one else besides them; neither Ye Qiu nor Uncle Gu had any reaction. It seemed he had indeed lost his mind. Was this what they meant by people seeing their family members just before dying?
Turning his head, he saw an exquisite couple standing in front of him.
Gu Dad looked slightly smug as he raised his chin, “I told you to come from behind; it really startled him.”
“Look at how lavishly you’re dressed, you’ve completely outshone your mother.” Gu Mom, beautiful and perfectly proportioned, looked nothing like a mother of a child.
“Chen Chen dressed up so formally just to see you guys,” Ye Qiu raised an eyebrow.
Gu Chen dazedly nodded; he felt completely out of place with these three.
Everything in front of him stimulated his nerves, and in an instant, countless images flooded into his mind—the car accident, everything that happened before his amnesia came rushing back.
He was Gu Chen, the young master of the Gu family. Ye Qiu was his senior from university, and after falling for him at first sight, they ended up together smoothly. They married after his graduation, but everything changed drastically when Jian Lexin returned from overseas.
His father’s health began to deteriorate, and he grew paranoid, suspecting Ye Qiu. Ye Qiu had brought doctors to help him, but he insisted on trusting Jian Lexin. After taking some medicine one day, he received a strange text message. When he arrived at the location described in the message, he saw Ye Qiu laughing and talking with the head of a rival company. The sound of the car screeching and people screaming—they all ended abruptly.
It wasn’t until that night when the four of them sat at the dining table that Gu Chen realized these three knew the truth, while he alone had been left in the dark.
Gripping his chopsticks tightly, Gu Chen seethed, “I think I heard you say before you left that I mustn’t see you.”
Gu Mom shot back without hesitation, “If you hadn’t cried every time we left when you were a child, we wouldn’t have thought of such a method!”
“I didn’t…” Gu Chen’s cheeks turned slightly red. “I never acted like that!”
Ye Qiu bit his lip, trying not to smirk, his eyes glinting with amusement.
Not only did they not stand up for him, they were even enjoying the show; feeling defeated, Gu Chen let it go—embarrassment be damned.
“Dad, I thought you were unwell?”
“So, I’m out here recuperating, and thanks to Ye Qiu’s help, I’m getting better,” Gu Dad said somewhat sheepishly, but then added with gusto, “Do you think your mom and I are still lovey-dovey? Do young people like you even need a honeymoon?”
Gu Chen thought, first burst your bubble of pink sweetness before speaking such grandiose words!
Gu Dad was brimming with pride: “Thanks to Ye Qiu managing the company, even while we were away… during treatment, I heard everyone complimenting him. I really have great taste.”
“What great taste? Clearly, I was the one who picked him from the start,” Gu Mom shot a glance at Gu Dad, who had no backbone and chose to concede.
With her big, gorgeous eyes, Gu Mom cutely said, “Chen Chen is so rich now; he’ll take care of mommy!”
“And daddy too!” Gu Dad chimed in.
Gu Chen was dumbfounded, nodding as the two celebrated joyfully, unable to contain themselves.
This was the first time he had alone time with Ye Qiu since regaining his memory, and Gu Chen felt somewhat flustered.
Ye Qiu handed him a very thick folder of documents, guiding him on how to open it.
“Well, so you’ve been working for me all along.”
Gu Chen felt a slight ripple of emotion; this person had put all assets in his name, likely having considered the external impacts long ago. It was unfortunate that he only realized it today.
“Are you not afraid that I’ll kick you out when you grow old and can’t work anymore?”
Ye Qiu raised his eyebrow, “Can’t say I won’t.”
After getting back together, there was no distance between them as Gu Chen had expected. Their feelings had grown even closer due to that incident.
“One last question: you know how dangerous it is to suddenly collide when driving so well?”
A few more seconds, and he wouldn’t even be a vegetable.
Gu Chen sighed, “I had taken medicine and was sleeping when suddenly a call came in saying you…”
His thoughts momentarily drifted… who would have known he would drive over and see Ye Qiu happily chatting with the rival company’s team? By the time he realized what was happening, he was already lying on the ground.
He had clearly seen the red light and desperately hit the brakes, but the car still careened out of control.
Blood gushed out, and amid the crowd, he faintly heard Ye Qiu’s voice. The taste of blood filled his nostrils, and he wanted to speak but couldn’t hear himself over the noise; he ultimately lost consciousness.
“Fortunately, it’s fine now.” Gu Chen said in relief, “I feel like I had a long dream.”
Ye Qiu explained everything about the holographic treatment plan to him.
“So you mean the dreams I thought I was having were all part of your storyline?” Gu Chen asked curiously, not stopping his questions.
“Why are you always so broke?”
“Why am I always so rich?”
Ye Qiu retorted, “Don’t you find that there’s a sense of immersion?”
