He came to meet Gu Chen not to witness their affection but to tear them apart. His mention of the car accident was meant to deepen the rift between the two, while his reference to Gu’s current accomplishments aimed to provoke Gu Chen’s wariness, not to showcase how capable Ye Qiu was in managing the company.
He had appeared far more frequently than Ye Qiu, and because he had studied abroad for a few years, Gu Chen was now with a stranger, even married. Why should that be allowed? He believed he was better than Ye Qiu in every way, with a family background comparable to the Gu family. Aside from looks, where Ye Qiu had the edge, he had nothing less than Ye Qiu.
Even if Gu Chen were gay, he should be with him!
The results of the banquet were drastically different from his expectations; however, he would not give up so easily. His specialty was waiting. If he could succeed once, he could succeed again.
“As a good brother who grew up with Gu Chen, I’ve always regretted not being present at his wedding…” Jian Lexin raised his glass amidst the audience’s gaze, “Here’s to you both.”
With that, he downed his drink in one go and felt it wasn’t enough, so he finished three glasses as if to apologize to the couple.
The others looked on with some confusion; after all, who didn’t know that he had been confined to prevent him from attending the wedding for it to go smoothly? If he had truly shown up, they couldn’t help but wonder what a scene that would have been.
They were not ignorant to what had transpired. Jian Lexin had caused quite a stir back when he stirred trouble over Gu Chen and Ye Qiu’s relationship. Now that something had happened to Gu Chen, they secretly suspected Jian Lexin was involved. Unfortunately, they had no proof, and with Jian Lexin appearing again, the truth about the situation was as murky as ever.
Gu Chen was no fool; the moment Jian Lexin intentionally mentioned his amnesia, he sensed something was off. He knew this was deliberate, but with so many people present, he couldn’t act out. Instead, he asked, “If we’re such good friends, why didn’t you come to bless me at the event?”
Ye Qiu immediately responded, “Chen Chen, don’t say that—he might have had something important to attend to.”
Jian Lexin’s face darkened as he couldn’t help but retort, “True, Mr. Ye, someone who comes to the Gu family directly wouldn’t understand my inconvenience.”
Jian Lexin cursed in his heart: just a pretty boy, what’s there to be proud of?
He had hesitated initially, but now… “I’ve come to terms with things; I wish you happiness.”
Suddenly, Jian Lexin misplaced his drink, spilling it on himself as he stood up. “Sorry, my clothes got a bit wet. I’ll step out for a moment.”
After bidding farewell, Jian Lexin slipped away to a blind spot, secretly heading to the private area upstairs.
Dealing with an ordinary person, especially one who had a mental condition, was too easy for a psychologist like him.
Preparation was key; in anticipation of today, he had stealthily placed several psychotropic medications in his clothing. The Gu home felt as familiar as his own, and he could find Gu Chen’s room with his eyes closed.
To ensure everyone could relax, Uncle Gu had kept the servants in the kitchen and hadn’t been seen; that meant Gu Chen was alone upstairs. Jian Lexin’s heart raced, feeling as if it might burst out of his chest.
He followed his memory to the master bedroom area and, indeed, found several medicine bottles in Gu Chen’s small lounge, letting out a cold smile.
He selected pills that looked similar from his pocket and replaced the contents, placing them back in their spot.
Once all was done, he calmly returned to the dinner table. Jian Lexin had now switched out the medication Gu Chen was supposed to take. Watching their interactions became much more pleasant now.
The confused attendees assumed that he had truly moved on.
As the gathering drew to a close, everything seemed calm, and everyone departed, satisfied with the information they had gleaned.
With ulterior motives, Jian Lexin didn’t easily follow the others out but firmly stayed at the Gu residence, which perfectly aligned with everyone’s wishes. They all knew Jian Lexin was the young master’s psychologist, and having someone like him around after Gu Chen’s recent discharge was the most reassuring.
Uncle Gu was unusually proactive, bringing Gu Chen his medication before bed.
Gu Chen was bewildered. It had been a long time since he had seen Uncle Gu bring him his medicine after their last argument. What was going on?
Confused, Gu Chen was certainly not going to take this so-called “medicine.” After a brief disagreement, he pretended to leave behind the nearly-empty bottle, using the excuse that he would take it before sleeping to send Uncle Gu away.
Jian Lexin, hearing the heated argument from the other side, nodded secretly. This was the effect he desired.
Gu Chen knocked on Jian Lexin’s door with the bottle in hand.
After tidying up his clothes, Jian Lexin opened the door to greet the visiting Gu Chen.
“Is this the medicine you usually take?” Jian Lexin asked, his expression turning strange as he scanned Gu Chen up and down with unsettling eyes.
Gu Chen nodded, “Is there something wrong?”
“Of course there is.” Jian Lexin frowned, examining the bottle filled with professional terminology, “Although I can’t understand what this medicine is, I suspect someone has swapped the contents.”
“Can you smell the difference? The scent on the bottle cap seems off compared to the pills inside.”
Gu Chen hesitantly took the bottle, and indeed, the scents did not match, leaving him feeling uncertain.
“Gu Chen, I know that what I did today wasn’t right, but you must believe that I genuinely care about you,” Jian Lexin said, observing the silent Gu Chen, his lips curving slightly. “You have to believe that no one else in this world will care for you as much as I do.”
With malevolent intent, Jian Lexin subtly manipulated the situation. After preparing a bottle of spiked milk, he escorted Gu Chen out.
What he didn’t realize was that by not sending Gu Chen back to his room—a missed opportunity to save him—he had squandered a crucial moment.
Back in his room, lying on the bed, Gu Chen sensed something was off. The medication was produced by a company under Ye Qiu’s name; if he wanted to harm himself, he could simply put the drugs directly in the bottle. Why would anyone swap the medications instead?
