A few of them quickly sat down, their faces filled with anxiety. Lin Shiheng couldn’t help but laugh, “What’s with that expression? Am I going to eat you or something?”
“Alright, this isn’t the military, so there’s no need to be so rigid. Let me introduce you; this is my wife, He Xuezhuzhu.”
Even though he said this, the young soldiers still didn’t relax. Lin Shiheng asked again, “How did you get here? Did you walk or take a car?”
“Reporting, Commander! We took a car.”
“Just the few of you came together? Are there others?”
Upon hearing this, the soldiers hesitated and exchanged glances, finally responding cautiously, “Deputy Commander Zhang also came.”
“Mm.” Lin Shiheng nodded. “Deputy Commander Zhang is directly in charge of you. It’s normal for him to come since Liuzi was injured.”
The soldiers shrank their heads, “Deputy Commander Zhang might still take a while to arrive.”
Liuzi asked curiously, and they replied, “On our way here, we ran into Deputy Commander Zhang’s wife. It seems she got in trouble with the head nurse, and Deputy Commander Zhang went to ask her about it.”
“Deputy Commander Zhang’s wife?”
“Yes, we overheard it. Apparently, she almost injected air into an injured soldier’s veins and was stopped by the head nurse, who punished her by making her recite some lines.”
Liuzi’s expression suddenly turned strange, but the young soldiers didn’t notice. It was only Lin Shiheng who caught it and turned to look at him, “What’s wrong?”
“That injured soldier… is me.”
“Ah? It’s you!”
“What a coincidence!”
Liuzi slowly began to feel uneasy. Deputy Commander Zhang had a bad temper, and he worried about being held accountable for this incident.
“Well, I should probably go and clarify that it doesn’t bother me, so the head nurse doesn’t punish her.”
“Sounds good; we’ll help you over.”
“No, no, it’s fine. My injury is on my hand, not my leg. I can walk myself.”
Even though he said that, seeing Liuzi venture out alone made the young soldiers uneasy.
Of course, there was also the matter of being flustered in front of a superior.
“Um, Commander Lin, let’s go out and check, see if we can say something.”
Seeing them like frightened mice, Lin Shiheng didn’t mind and nodded, “Go ahead.”
When they left, He Xuezhuzhu curiously asked, “Shiheng, why do they seem so frightened of you?”
“They are basically new recruits; I’ve taken them under my wing for a few days before,” Lin Shiheng said with a smile. “Young people can be zealous, and I punished them when they got too fiery before. They probably learned to be cautious.”
He Xuezhuzhu nodded, “They seem pretty obedient now.”
“Looks obedient.”
Lin Shiheng gazed at the open door, a faint smile playing on his lips, his voice gentle. “But each one of them has a stubborn streak deep down.”
When Liuzi and the others arrived, they happened to see a few people gathered at the doorway, watching something lively.
Indeed, the people of Huaguo loved to gather and watch.
Without much thought, the group moved forward to squeeze in and plead with the head nurse. Just then, they heard the nurse’s voice, tinged with anger, “She almost injected air into the soldier’s body! This could be fatal!”
“But she was stopped, wasn’t she?” Zhang Yanming was also angry, shielding the quietly sobbing Miao Xing behind him. “Even if she hadn’t been, you said it was a possibility, meaning it might have been fine!”
After saying this, feeling Miao Xing gripping his clothes tightly out of dependency, and recalling how she said his recent indifference made her disoriented and make a mistake, Zhang Yanming felt his heart soften further, but his expression toward the head nurse grew increasingly grim.
“To punish Miao Xing in front of so many people for something that may not have happened is too much.”
The head nurse’s face turned pale with anger. “Deputy Commander Zhang, you are a deputy commander and have many soldiers under you. You should know that most soldiers who come to our hospital are injured for the sake of our country. When they are hurt and come to our hospital, we, as medical staff, must properly treat and care for them.”
“Miao Xing almost injected air into the body of the injured soldier. I haven’t reported it for her dismissal; that should already show leniency. You’re still a deputy commander; in your heart, is a soldier’s life not as important as your wife’s few lines of recitation?!”
Zhang Yanming scoffed coldly and pulled Miao Xing into his arms. “To me, she is the most important.”
The head nurse was left speechless.
Liuzi and the others were also stunned. Most importantly, they knew the injured soldier was Liuzi.
This meant that, in Zhang Yanming’s eyes, Liuzi’s life was worth less than a few lines of recitation from his wife.
At this moment, the chill in Liuzi’s heart was beyond words.
As a fellow officer, when Commander Lin learned of his injury, he brought his wife and the dumplings she made to visit him. Yet Deputy Commander Zhang didn’t seem to care about his life at all.
He hadn’t been blown up by a landmine; instead, he almost died at the hands of Deputy Commander Zhang’s wife.
Liuzi’s expression turned grim, and before he could respond, one soldier had already turned to leave. He quickly followed the other two young soldiers.
“What are you doing?”
“I’m going to report this! For him to say such things, he’s simply unworthy of being a deputy commander!”
