Zhang Yanming hadn’t spoken yet, but Miao Xing began with a greeting: “Hello.”
She observed He Xuezhun and noted that while her appearance was delicate, her skin was somewhat yellowish. The hands that were exposed didn’t seem as fair as her own, and there was even a little bulge in her abdomen, immediately giving her a sense of superiority.
What could someone like her possibly compare to?
Just at that moment, a chubby young man holding a water bottle squeezed through the crowd towards them, setting the bottle down in front of He Xuezhun without paying attention to anything else.
“Sis, drink some water. Is it still hot? I’ll fan you.”
Lin Shiheng, seeing Zhang Yanming looking at him, said, “Zhang Deputy Commander, this is my sister’s younger brother, He Xiaobao. He’s a kid who will be brought to the military this time. You’re sitting in his spot.”
Looking at He Xiaobao, who was full of concern for his sister, and recalling Miao Xing’s younger brother’s greedy demeanor, Zhang Yanming’s expression darkened further.
What kind of luck was Lin Shiheng having to have such an understanding brother-in-law?
They were both younger brothers; how could they differ so much?
He Xiaobao only noticed there was someone in his seat when Lin Shiheng spoke, and having just been frightened, he didn’t dare to speak, standing obediently next to He Xuezhun, his hands gently fanning her with a book.
Not saying anything was futile; Lin Shiheng had already called him a kid, and Zhang Yanming couldn’t just take the seat from a child. Although usually, he wouldn’t let anyone take his spot in the military, he could only maintain a stern face and slowly rise.
He stood up, but Zhang Yanming didn’t think Lin Shiheng would actually see him standing there, as this grassroots fellow usually yielded to him, didn’t he?
Unfortunately, just as that thought crossed his mind, the handsome man sitting opposite urged, “Xiaobao, sit back down. I’ll fan your sister.”
He Xiaobao obediently returned to his seat.
Zhang Yanming immediately felt a blockage in his heart; despite being a deputy commander, he hadn’t really experienced hardships growing up. He hadn’t slept well the night before, and today he had been tangled with Miao Xing’s younger brother, coupled with the journey where he hadn’t stopped moving his legs. No matter how many accolades he had on the outside, at heart, Zhang Yanming was still that pampered young master, and at this moment, his legs ached so much that he could barely stand.
He had thought Lin Shiheng would recognize the situation and give up his seat, but it turned out he was completely oblivious.
Zhang Yanming speculated that Lin Shiheng still held a grudge against Miao Xing, especially since his attitude had suddenly changed after that incident.
Thinking of those attitudes as merely the resentment of a failure, his mood improved slightly.
Before he could feel relieved for long, Lin Shiheng had already “kindly” suggested, “Zhang Deputy Commander, did you not manage to get seats? Why don’t you lean against the side of our seats? We can look out for each other.”
Zhang Yanming was utterly unwilling.
Why would he want to keep such a disheveled self in front of his rival for an extended duration?
But before he could refuse, Miao Xing had already agreed, placing the two large bags she was carrying down, her face full of gratitude towards Lin Shiheng: “Shiheng, thank you so much. Then we’ll rest here.”
Zhang Yanming’s already unattractive expression turned even darker.
Miao Xing was usually perceptive and could read his expressions; why was she acting so out of character in front of Lin Shiheng?
Did she really have thoughts towards Lin Shiheng, knowing he and Lin Shiheng were at odds?
It was one thing not to confirm their relationship, but even seeing Miao Xing fawning over Lin Shiheng, he had only blamed Lin Shiheng for it. But now Miao Xing had become his woman, and yet she was still interacting with Lin Shiheng. On top of that, Miao Xing’s family and brother had left him with a bad impression; Zhang Yanming’s feelings of discomfort began to surface, despite swearing that he loved Miao Xing and would never blame her.
Miao Xing was completely oblivious to Zhang Yanming’s grim mood. To be precise, she noticed but didn’t take it seriously; when had Zhang Yanming’s expression ever looked good during their journey back to her hometown?
While at her house, he had been so dismissive towards her parents, treating her brother as if he were a servant when buying tickets, and then he hadn’t even lifted a finger when they rushed to catch the train.
She had carried two large bags of luggage all by herself, and after tiring her wrists, she had whimsically tried to get Zhang Yanming to help; that man had actually suggested throwing them away. Reluctant to toss her belongings, she had to bring them onto the train with her.
Her discomfort peaked when she saw Lin Shiheng sitting there, looking fresh and handsome, with a gentle demeanor.
From the beginning, her target hadn’t been Zhang Yanming but the soft-spoken Lin Shiheng. It was Zhang Yanming who was insistent, and he had forced a kiss on her while Lin Shiheng was unconscious, leading Lin Shiheng to abandon her.
And in the end, she had succumbed to Zhang Yanming, only for this man to treat her like this.
Without the rush of an affair, the domineering and handsome Zhang Yanming, so prideful with everyone else, seemed to have lost all his merits in Miao Xing’s eyes.
She had appreciated his decisiveness before, but when that decisiveness meant he wouldn’t help her carry things, it turned into irritability and disgust.
In this moment, Miao Xing watched the man gently fanning the woman beside him, and a twinge of regret washed over her.
If it were Lin Shiheng in that place, he would have helped her without needing to wait for her to say a word.
“Um…”
The train continued its journey, and the rapidly flashing scenery outside made He Xuezhun feel a bit dizzy. She closed her eyes to ease her discomfort and quietly leaned closer to her husband, whispering that she needed to go to the restroom.
“I’ll go with you.”
Lin Shiheng immediately stood up, placing the bag on the seat, turning to He Xiaobao to urge, “Xiaobao, I’m taking Xuezhun to the restroom. Keep an eye on the seats.”
Miao Xing’s eyes flickered, glancing at He Xuezhun, who looked pale and weak, her face showing a smile as she gently said, “Shiheng, I also want to go. I’ll accompany Sister Xuezhun.”
