“Let all the zombies and those little mice who covet you witness this.”
Song spoke to himself, his narrow eyes squinting with delight as he sensed Song Jinshi’s intense longing for energy at that moment. He gently sliced open his wrist. Without needing any encouragement, Song Jinshi instinctively leaned in and began to suck the blood. Song’s other hand slowly stroked Song Jinshi’s head. “Once you drink, you’ll need to do it again every ten days, or you won’t be able to stand it.”
“Forget it, what’s the use of telling you this? After all, you can only stay by my side.”
Time passed by second by second. It was almost time for the convoy to set off.
Bo Yanan rushed back almost in a run. After getting out of the car, he was called over by the senior officials at the base to attend a meeting about researching the antidote. At one point, he wanted to leave, but they kept him held up with various matters. Just ten minutes before the convoy was set to leave, he finally made it back. Most people had already taken their seats in their assigned vehicles. Bo Yanan thought Song Jinshi was also waiting for him inside the car. However, when he opened the door, he didn’t find the familiar face.
Frowning, Bo Yanan asked the others in the same car. Everyone shook their heads, indicating they didn’t know where she had gone. A child, however, mentioned the situation. But the child was too young and couldn’t express the details clearly. After listening, Bo Yanan roughly pieced together that Song Jinshi had been saved by a man and was presumably in that man’s vehicle. Just as he intended to search for her, he noticed the convoy had started moving. Thus, Bo Yanan had no choice but to wait for the next stop to find Song Jinshi. Luckily, he had her talisman on him, allowing him to sense Song Jinshi’s safety at that moment.
Meanwhile, inside that car, Song Jinshi had woken up. Slowly opening her eyes, she was greeted by a very unfamiliar face. Panicking, she got up from the man’s lap, her face flushed as she apologized, “I’m sorry for disturbing you, but why am I here?”
Song watched Song Jinshi’s series of movements in silence, his eyes never leaving her. After a long pause, he leisurely spoke, “Have you forgotten what just happened?”
At the man’s reminder, Song Jinshi recalled the recent events. Back then, although her vision had been blurred, her consciousness was relatively clear, so she knew it was this man who had saved her.
“Thank you so much! However, I don’t have anything to repay you with right now. When we stop next time, I’ll go find my husband, and I promise I’ll thank you properly!”
Song’s previously relaxed demeanor instantly tensed. His eyes narrowed in displeasure, “Husband?”
Song Jinshi, unaware of the man’s current mood, looked at him in confusion, “Yes, we’ve been married for some time. He’s not here this time, which is why I ended up in this situation. But I’m really so grateful to you!”
After saying this, Song Jinshi beamed a bright smile at Song. Hearing this, Song quickly understood. It seemed those little mice had tampered with her memory and even went as far as to marry her off.
His deep gaze lingered on Song Jinshi for a moment before he suddenly broke into a radiant smile. “Alright then, you must make sure your husband thanks me properly later.”
Song Jinshi nodded repeatedly like a chick pecking at rice. “I definitely will!”
After saying all this, the car fell into an awkward silence. To ease the tension, Song Jinshi stared out at the scenery outside the window. Sometimes, when the glass reflected the man beside her, she would find herself momentarily startled.
For some reason, she felt as if she should know this man. The growing sense of unease began to gnaw at her, making her anxious and longing to return to Bo Yanan’s side soon.
Time trickled away, and after an unknown event, the convoy stopped for about a minute before resuming normal travel. When the convoy stopped again, everyone was abruptly informed that no one was allowed to exit the cars for a check, as someone important was looking for someone.
Feeling uneasy, Song Jinshi gazed outside the vehicle. A team of people checked each car one by one. Soon, they arrived in front of her vehicle. When the door opened, Song Jinshi thought they would do a quick scan of her and then leave like before. However, these individuals did not move on but stopped in front of her car.
The leading guard glanced at Song Jinshi a few times before opening her side of the vehicle door. “You need to come with us.”
Confused, Song Jinshi looked at the guard, “What have I done wrong?”
Noticing that their display had startled her, the guard softened his expression. “Someone is looking for you; please come with us.”
Song Jinshi was at a loss about who could be looking for her. She had no family here and didn’t know anyone. The thought of seeking help from the man who had saved her crossed her mind, but she quickly dismissed it. She didn’t want to trouble him any further; he could contend with that special abilities team, but that didn’t mean he could take on the entire base.
As Song Jinshi left, Song remained in the car, eyes downcast, speaking in an ambiguous tone, “Another little mouse has arrived.”
Following the guards, Song Jinshi arrived at several vehicles at the front of the convoy. When the door opened, she reflexively looked inside. A cold-looking man sat there, his gaze fixed on her, as if filled with countless deep emotions.
A wave of unfamiliar familiarity and an irregular heartbeat enveloped her.
Tilting her head, she asked in confusion, “Haven’t I seen you somewhere before?”
