Chi Xingyu held back for a moment but couldn’t resist saying, “Who wrote that to you?”
Zhong Yi didn’t stop searching through his belongings; the room was a mess after the recent change, “Tong Sui.”
Chi Xingyu sat up abruptly, “You’re lying! Why would he write to you?”
Even he himself had never received anything from Tong Sui.
Zhong Yi, irritated by the doubt, halted all movements, unfolded the letter, and brought it to him, “You can see for yourself.”
Chi Xingyu reached out to take it.
Zhong Yi immediately pulled his hand back, “What are you doing? I only said you could look, not touch.”
Chi Xingyu: “…”
It was just a piece of scrap paper; was it really worth this much fuss?
As he read the words on it, his mocking expression froze.
While Chi Xingyu couldn’t be sure it was Tong Sui’s handwriting, only Tong Sui had ridden in Zhong Yi’s car today.
Even so, Chi Xingyu still didn’t believe it.
“This can’t be something you forged, right?” Chi Xingyu said as he tried to take another look.
Zhong Yi tucked the letter away first.
“Why would I bother to do that?” Zhong Yi laughed, “You’re just envious.”
Chi Xingyu furrowed his brow tightly.
He couldn’t believe Tong Sui had such poor judgment, and he couldn’t figure out why.
If there was one possibility…
Chi Xingyu said solemnly, “What did you do to him in the car?”
No wonder they returned so late; Zhong Yi must have used some trick.
Zhong Yi replied, “What could I do? I was just responsible for bringing him back; I didn’t do anything.”
Chi Xingyu didn’t believe his words.
Zhong Yi, still searching, finally found what he wanted and turned to leave the room.
Chi Xingyu followed him out.
Zhong Yi walked directly to the room where Tong Sui was, stopped, and knocked on the door.
Chi Xingyu didn’t expect him to be so bold.
After a moment, the door opened.
Jiang Ciyun stood in the doorway, blocking the entrance, and glanced coldly at the two of them, “We’re getting ready to rest.”
His expression and posture were infuriatingly aloof.
Zhong Yi said, “I’m looking for Tong Sui.”
Jiang Ciyun had no intention of letting him in; he simply repeated his earlier words.
Tong Sui, who was drowsily preparing to sleep, heard the voices outside, finally poked his head out, hair in disarray, cheeks slightly flushed from sleep, “What’s going on?”
Seeing that Tong Sui was awakened, Jiang Ciyun stepped aside, “Someone is looking for you.”
Zhong Yi quickly walked in, followed by Chi Xingyu; this surprising duo left Tong Sui bewildered.
He hesitated, “…What’s the matter?”
“I have something very important to give you,” Zhong Yi said as he approached and suddenly crouched down.
This startled Tong Sui.
Zhong Yi opened a box he was holding, revealing a familiar large diamond.
It was the same diamond he had whimsically declared was Tong Sui’s if he agreed to be his prince consort.
But why was he bringing it now?
Zhong Yi said, “After receiving the letter you wrote to me, I decided to give this to you.”
Tong Sui’s dulled senses finally kicked back in, and he quickly helped the still-crouched Zhong Yi to his feet, “What are you doing? We’ve only known each other for a few days.”
Even gifting something didn’t have to be this extravagant.
Zhong Yi replied, “You wrote me a letter.”
“That was just to thank you for bringing me back; it was just friendship!” Tong Sui stated.
Zhong Yi wasn’t going to let it go that easily and pressed, “Then why didn’t you choose someone else?”
He specifically chose him.
Tong Sui initially wanted to give Zhong Yi some face but could only be honest now, “I chose randomly.”
He pulled out a few other small notes.
“It could have been anyone, not just you.”
Zhong Yi turned to stone on the spot.
Chi Xingyu, who was next to him, couldn’t help but chuckle, “Looks like Fourth Lord Zhong is indeed the chosen one.”
Usually, Zhong Yi wouldn’t be so easily flustered, but his face turned bright red in an instant. He shoved the diamond into Tong Sui’s hands and blurted out, “Even so, it can only belong to you.”
With that, he left without looking back.
Tong Sui wanted to chase after him, but Jiang Ciyun, who watched the whole thing from the side, said, “Don’t chase; you can return it tomorrow just the same.”
Zhong Yi didn’t go back to the room but instead went downstairs to start his car, rolling down the window and speeding along the coastline. The cool night breeze did little to cool the heat on his face.
After racing for a while, Zhong Yi finally began to calm down a bit.
He leaned against the steering wheel, pulling out the letter.
Zhong Yi couldn’t understand why he reacted so strongly to a piece of paper, or perhaps it wasn’t the paper that mattered, but the person who wrote it.
Tong Sui hadn’t written it specifically for him.
In that case, keeping something like this was pointless. As Zhong Yi clenched the paper firmly, at the very last moment, he hesitated to retract his hand.
He still couldn’t bear to tear it up.
Zhong Yi placed the letter against his chest because it represented his first love.
