Several researchers thought that everything was finally calm, only to see his face flushed with heat. One of them reached out to touch him and was startled, quickly bringing over fever-reducing medicine.
Tong Sui was roused from his slumber, forcing his eyes open. The mist in his irises clouded over with confusion, and his cheeks were tinged with an unusual pink due to the high fever. Another glass of water was handed to him.
He accepted it, expecting it to be sweet syrup like before, but instead, he tasted a bitter and unpalatable medicine. The difference between sweet and bitter was too stark.
Tong Sui frowned, the mist in his eyes deepening, and his frail figure seemed like it could collapse at any moment.
The others watched in stunned silence. Though his appearance was weak and beautiful, it had a sickly allure. Tong Sui gritted his teeth and swallowed the medicine, the cup was taken away immediately after.
The researchers tidied up the lab and turned off the overhead lights. “We won’t disturb you any longer; sleep for a while,” they said.
After the lab door closed, Tong Sui fell asleep almost immediately, not even hearing their discussion at the door.
“Do you think what’s written in that report is true?” One of the researchers said, a glimmer of hope in his eyes. “If it’s true, then we’re saved.”
“We can only find out once Tong Sui recovers,” another responded.
Jian Lexian, who was called away, entered Lou Yelin’s office. He pushed the door open, clearly a little bitter that he didn’t gain any advantage in front of Tong Sui earlier.
Lou Yelin replied, “Tong Sui is part of Jiang Hua’s team, don’t go overboard.”
Jiang Hua’s team. Jian Lexian sneered in his heart.
“What are you afraid of from a mere Jiang Hua? Before the apocalypse, he was just a dog my dad hired with money from abroad.”
“You’re fearful of his abilities, just wait for him to ride over you,” Jian Lexian added.
Lou Yelin’s expression darkened as he was hit on the mark. He slammed his hand on the desk, coldly stating, “Jian Lexian, don’t think just because you supply resources that you can boss me around. The base can run just fine without you!”
Seeing Lou Yelin genuinely angry, Jian Lexian shifted his expression. “Why so serious? I’m just looking out for you. In the apocalypse, too many want to seize power from you. You must be ruthless to keep them in line.”
As he spoke, he pulled out some resources.
“Director Lou, compared to those with ulterior motives, I am the only one truly loyal to you.”
Lou Yelin’s expression softened a bit, warning him, “Let this slide, but if you provoke Jiang Hua or Tong Sui again, you’ll be responsible for whatever happens.”
“I know I was wrong, I promise it won’t happen again,” he smiled as he apologized.
Lou Yelin waved him off impatiently, telling him to leave.
The moment Jian Lexian stepped out, his face darkened. He naturally understood that Lou Yelin was just interested in his resources and wouldn’t dare offend Jiang Hua, the most powerful of them all.
Ever since Tong Sui had allied with Jiang Hua, his life had been so much better.
Jian Lexian’s eyes turned icy. Without Tong Sui’s presence, all of this could have been his.
Meanwhile, a rugged vehicle sped along the city streets, racing toward a small transfer station in the city center.
As buildings became denser, the number of wandering zombies noticeably increased.
The team in the vehicle was on high alert.
Zombies lunged at them.
The team members inside used their abilities, but a few stragglers that managed to get close were ruthlessly killed by Jiang Hua from the backseat before they even touched the car.
The sun had set.
The last bit of twilight was blocked by the towering buildings as Wang Tao, sitting in the driver’s seat, asked, “Team Leader Hua, should we continue forward or find a place to rest for the night?”
They had entered the city center now.
This cursed place was teeming with zombies; even during food shortages, no one dared to venture here, highlighting just how terrifying it was.
Not to mention nighttime was when these zombies were most excited.
Jiang Hua replied, “Keep going.”
They had been outside for too long, and Jiang Hua didn’t want to waste any more time.
Wang Tao could only grit his teeth and drive on.
The darkened tall buildings loomed like steel beasts lying dormant in the night. To minimize their presence, they did not turn on the high beams of the vehicle.
After driving for a while, countless pairs of glowing green eyes suddenly appeared in the darkness.
Wang Tao hastily slammed on the brakes.
A dense swarm of zombies came charging toward them.
Wang Tao felt completely dumbfounded.
If this were the pre-apocalypse, being chased by so many would have made him ecstatic.
But now, he was nearly scared to death.
Jiang Hua reacted swiftly, opening the back door of the vehicle with a cold expression. “You all keep going; I’ll lead them away.”
The team members watched as he walked alone into the dark mass of zombies. The night wind tousled his hair, and the atmosphere around him was chilling and deadly.
He was even more frightening than the zombies themselves.
The irrational zombies, completely unaware that the man before them was the true monster, charged at him, gaping their rotting mouths.
Before they could even graze his clothing, they were instantly turned to ash by the sudden lightning strike.
Jiang Hua randomly chose a nearby vehicle, slid inside, and closed the door.
As the zombies lunged at him, he calmly turned on the high beams, invigorating the zombies even more as they craved to reach him from inside the car.
Jiang Hua’s expression was indifferent; he slammed the gas pedal with force, executing a perfect drift that flung the zombies clinging to the window away.
The vehicle accelerated rapidly, roaring through the darkened streets of the city.
The throng of zombies followed closely behind.
