Luo Yelin was momentarily stunned.
He never expected that an ordinary space ability user could remain unfazed while presenting such a large amount of supplies.
Could it be that these were leftovers from some mission?
His expression changed slightly as he coldly asked, “Where did you get all these things?”
Jian Lexian guessed his thoughts and reassured him, “Don’t worry, these are unrelated to any mission; they are my personal supplies.”
Luo Yelin replied, “Please, take a seat.”
Jian Lexian smiled and sat down across from him, “My conditions are simple. I hope to be given an administrative position to contribute to the base.”
“That’s not an issue,” Luo Yelin stated. “You can be in charge of the supply distribution.”
“Okay.”
A glint of triumph flashed in Jian Lexian’s eyes.
Luo Yelin said, “You should accompany me to the upcoming meeting.”
As Luo Yelin entered the crowded meeting room, the noise temporarily subsided.
Jian Lexian followed him in.
Someone grumbled, “District Chief, we are about to start the meeting. What are you doing letting someone unrelated join us?”
They were all former members of the military district.
After the apocalypse, they had been suppressed by Luo Yelin’s abilities and background and had never been genuinely satisfied. Now, with food shortages and rising panic within the base, some among them had begun to entertain thoughts of replacing the current leaders.
Jian Lexian stated, “District Chief Luo has tasked me with managing the distribution of supplies. I would appreciate your guidance moving forward.”
“Why should he be allowed to do this?”
“Yelin, don’t you think you should discuss these matters with us first?”
Luo Yelin coldly replied, “If any of you have the ability to solve the supply shortage issue, I can just as easily hand this position to them.”
The room fell silent.
Jian Lexian sat down and, with a smile, suggested, “We have been too lenient with them in the past. I propose that starting today, we reduce the free distribution of supplies. Also, institutions such as research facilities need to have their allowances cut.”
“No way!” a middle-aged man shouted. “Supplying supplies already decreased significantly; further reductions will starve people, and the order we’ve worked so hard to establish will collapse!”
Jian Lexian retorted, “Supplies are limited; we can only guarantee our own interests. If you find this unacceptable, then you can give up your share to those who are useless.”
The conference room was plunged into silence.
Jian Lexian secretly smiled to himself.
In his past life, no amount of pleading had garnered him compassion, while this group could sit in the base and coldly watch as others were kept out, left to be bitten by zombies.
Jian Lexian clenched his fists.
Thus, this time he intended for everyone to experience the taste of hunger, just like his previous life.
Tong Sui had just woken up in the morning.
The communicator on his bedside rang precisely on time. Groggily, he poked his head out from under Jiang Hua’s blanket, picked it up, and said, “…Hello?”
He struggled to keep his eyes open.
After a brief chat with Jiang Hua, Tong Sui got up to wash up, took out the breakfast Jiang Hua had prepared for him, and warmed it up.
After finishing breakfast, Tong Sui grabbed the bag containing his research reports and headed downstairs.
As the elevator doors opened, two men in public security uniforms turned around and saluted him.
“Good morning, Mr. Tong Sui.”
Tong Sui was a bit taken aback by their attitude as he hesitantly replied, “…Morning?”
He walked ahead with the two men following him closely at a distance of about a meter.
“…” After a short walk, Tong Sui finally couldn’t hold back. He stopped and asked, “Do you need something?”
“Uh.”
The security team leader replied honestly, “Mr. Jiang Hua sent us to monitor… er, protect you.”
Tong Sui said, “No need. You can go back.”
“That’s not possible; if we return, we can’t report back,” the security team leader insisted. “We have to ensure your safety.”
Tong Sui could only ignore them and continue towards the research institute.
He knew Jiang Hua was concerned about him.
But these two couldn’t even compete with him, let alone protect him.
Tong Sui walked into the laboratory and began his experiments.
He had made significant progress.
As long as he continued his research, he was confident he could develop an antidote for zombies.
Time passed quickly.
The laboratory was brightly lit, and Tong Sui didn’t even notice it had turned dark until he received a call from Jiang Hua.
He answered while recording his experimental notes.
Jiang Hua asked, “Still in the laboratory?”
“Yeah, I still have some things to finish. It won’t take long; I’ll head back once I’m done.”
Tong Sui had said this before.
But he always emerged from the laboratory late at night, and this kind of overtime wasn’t good for his health.
Jiang Hua remarked, “I’ll check when you leave with them.”
Seeing that this line of reasoning couldn’t last, Tong Sui replied, “Got it, I’ll leave now.”
After hanging up the communicator, Tong Sui stood up and walked towards the laboratory exit.
He saw the two men in public security uniforms standing at the door, greeting him enthusiastically.
A flash of red flickered in Tong Sui’s eyes as he implanted a concept in their minds, “You have seen me safely return home.”
The two men nodded stiffly and, after walking away a distance, suddenly snapped back to reality.
“Eh? Why are we here?”
“I remember now, we just sent Tong Sui home.”
Tong Sui turned around and went back into the laboratory.
In truth, spending over ten hours a day here had made him feel that this body was struggling to cope; clothes that once fit well now felt loose.
If it weren’t for Jiang Hua’s nutritious meals, he probably would have already collapsed.
