“I won’t know if you’re working seriously unless I come,” Lou Yelin said coldly. “When will the results of the research on mutated plants be available?”
Xie Guohong’s expression faltered. “It might not be that quick.”
“Do you think I’m supporting all of you just for the fun of it?” Lou Yelin replied. “If we can’t find a solution for food sources, do you have any idea how many people will starve to death in the coming month?”
“That…”
Xie Guohong dared not respond. Outside, the zombies and various plants were continuously mutating, while their research had come to a standstill.
“Director Lou, we are already working hard, but this kind of thing won’t yield results just because we’re anxious.”
“I don’t care how you do it; I want to see results in no more than half a month,” Lou Yelin declared as he turned away.
He always felt there was another pair of eyes watching them besides the two of them.
But this strange feeling passed quickly, seeming to be just his illusion.
Lou Yelin said, “If there’s no progress by the deadline, don’t blame me for cutting the welfare benefits to the research institute.”
Xie Guohong could only nod repeatedly.
After sending Lou Yelin off, he spat heavily, “As if research is like a lottery, results can come whenever one wants.”
Lou Yelin returned to his office.
His assistant handed him some information. “Director, we’ve found a new granary, but it seems quite dangerous around there. There are tall mutated plants, and those who went to scout didn’t approach closely before turning back.”
“Uh-huh.”
Lou Yelin took the information and flipped through it.
According to the report, the amount of grain stored in this granary was astonishing, enough to cover their expenses for an entire month.
Currently, their food supply could only last a maximum of twenty days.
They had nearly exhausted the nearby resources; regardless of the danger, they had to go.
Lou Yelin said to his assistant, “Call Jiang Hua over for me.”
Twenty minutes later.
Jiang Hua pushed the door open and stood expressionlessly in front of him. “What do you need me for?”
“There’s a new mission,” Lou Yelin said, “if you can bring back this food, it will ensure that the base doesn’t run out of supplies and starve to death. So I hope you can set out as soon as possible.”
He pushed a map over.
Jiang Hua picked it up and looked at the location circled in red ink.
The granary was situated in a remote suburb, covering over a thousand square meters, surrounded by dense vegetation.
If this had been before the red rain, there would have been little difficulty, and a group of moderately strong supernatural beings could have handled it.
But after the red rain, the plants mutated.
This place had turned into the most dangerous area.
Jiang Hua folded the map and put it away. “Got it, I’ll set out early tomorrow morning.”
“Alright, thank you for your hard work,” Lou Yelin replied.
Jiang Hua didn’t say anything and left the office.
He arrived at the commercial area.
At one stall, various firearms were on display, and the owner was busy polishing his prized gun behind the glass counter.
Jiang Hua walked over.
“Take your time to look around,” the owner said, seeing Jiang Hua’s face, quickly standing up. “Oh, it’s Team Leader Hua! As a professional, you don’t need to look at these lower-tier guns. I just got a new batch of stock in the back that I’m sure you’ll like.”
Jiang Hua followed the owner into the warehouse behind a roller door, where the smell of gunpowder filled the air.
The owner picked up a rifle.
“This one has strong power and a long range; what do you think?”
Jiang Hua took it, frowned, and said, “It’s too heavy. Do you have lighter models with less recoil?”
Heavy?
The owner was taken aback for two seconds, then pulled out a handgun from a separate box. “I was going to keep this one for myself, but since you need it, you can try it out.”
Jiang Hua took the handgun.
He disassembled it to inspect the firing pin, chamber, and other components, noticing obvious signs of modification but confirming its safety.
He raised the handgun and fired a shot at a distant target.
“Bang!”
The target’s red center now had a new, explosive black hole, exhibiting more power than an ordinary gun.
Jiang Hua secured the gun. “I’ll take this one.”
After purchasing the weapon, he didn’t head straight back to the apartment but instead quickly navigated through the crowd, stopping at various stalls to buy many other items.
When Tong Sui finished work at noon and didn’t see Jiang Hua, his eyelids drooped in dismay. Although Jiang Hua had never promised to meet him, it still felt somewhat disappointing.
The research institute provided lunch to the researchers.
He had no appetite and barely touched his food.
After enduring the workday, as he exited the institute, he still didn’t see Jiang Hua anywhere.
Tong Sui stood in place, feeling confused.
A colleague passed by him, saying, “Xiao Sui, why haven’t you left yet?”
Only then did Tong Sui snap back to reality.
He returned to the apartment in a slump, pressed the fingerprint lock, and pushed the door open.
“Thud.”
The door swung back into a bag of something.
Tong Sui looked down and saw a large bag full of fruits.
He walked into the apartment, puzzled, and caught a rich fragrance in the air.
After noticing the amount of food on the counter, he was momentarily dumbfounded. “Team Leader Hua, are we having guests at home today?”
That didn’t seem right.
The counter was filled with many pre-prepared dishes, some already packed, while others clearly had just been cooked.
Tong Sui felt a bit dazed.
Was Jiang Hua planning to change careers to compete with the canteen next door and sell takeout?
Jiang Hua looked up.
Busy in the kitchen, beads of sweat trickled down his forehead, and stray hairs clung to his handsome features, creating a striking contrast with the apron he wore as he glanced over at Tong Sui.
