Tong Sui paused as he was drinking his porridge.
This was a rare occasion when Jiang Hua actively showed concern for him.
Tong Sui said, “Not too well, I had a nightmare all night.”
Jiang Hua’s eyes darkened slightly, and he asked softly, “What did you dream about?”
“Zombies were chasing and biting me,” Tong Sui complained, “They cornered me in an alley and bit my mouth and many other places.”
While Tong Sui was recounting the dream, he did not notice that Jiang Hua’s expression was a bit off.
After finishing his story, he took a big gulp of porridge, “It’s too bad I didn’t bring any weapons. Otherwise, I would have dealt with that ungrateful zombie.”
Jiang Hua raised the corners of his mouth slightly, “Later, you can catch up on sleep in the car.”
Tong Sui was stunned, “You smiled?”
Although it was just a slight curve at the corner of Jiang Hua’s mouth, it indeed transformed his austere face into a little more approachable.
Tong Sui said, “You look much more handsome when you smile.”
Jiang Hua replied, “Is that so?”
As Tong Sui continued to drink his porridge, he said, “Of course, if you smile more often, people won’t be so scared of you.”
Jiang Hua responded with a soft “Mm.”
His gaze fell on Tong Sui’s wrist, which was hidden beneath his sleeve; the faint red mark he left yesterday had yet to fade.
His gaze slowly drifted downwards.
What about the other parts covered by clothes?
After breakfast, Tong Sui got into the off-road vehicle.
Today, their task was to go to the gas station.
Tong Sui picked up the book he hadn’t finished reading yesterday and started again.
After about an hour, the off-road vehicle came to a stop.
This was a large gas station; a few wandering zombies were visible outside, appearing untouched by scavengers.
Jiang Hua communicated with the other vehicles via the radio, “For safety, try not to use guns.”
The other team members replied, “Understood.”
Inside the car, Wang Tao and Zhang Binyu took out their shovels and military knives.
Jiang Hua threw his long knife to Tong Sui, “Take this. Stay behind me and don’t run off.”
Tong Sui looked up, “Huh?”
Zhang Binyu said, “Team Leader Hua, you should let Tong Sui stay in the car; it’s quite dangerous outside. It’s safer to stay in the vehicle.”
Jiang Hua pulled out a crowbar from under the car seat and said indifferently, “There’s no place safer than being beside me.”
However, when it came to climbing walls, he was indeed the most diligent one.
When others said this, Wang Tao would certainly not believe it.
But since it was Jiang Hua, even without special abilities or a gun, protecting a small experimental subject was an easy task.
One by one, they got out of the car.
Tong Sui obediently followed Jiang Hua, holding the long knife he had given him.
He had seen Jiang Hua use this tool deftly before, making it look effortless while waving it around. Only when he held it himself did he feel its weight.
He was distracted thinking about the knife when suddenly a few zombies in the front, noticing live humans, opened their mouths and let out a “Heh heh” sound, charging towards them.
Jiang Hua swung the crowbar, the wedge-shaped front embedding itself into a zombie’s skull, and with a flick, he instantly sheared off half of its head.
The tool did not hinder his performance in the slightest.
In the blink of an eye, several zombies lay down.
Wang Tao exclaimed, “Wow, the crowbar is truly the sword of physics; what destructive power!”
“That depends on who wields it,” Zhang Binyu said, picking up crystal nuclei, “If it were you, would you dare use it?”
Just as Zhang Binyu bent down, the ground suddenly trembled lightly, and small stones jumped on the surface.
He frowned, “What—”
Before Zhang Binyu could finish his sentence, suddenly, a hand burst through the ground beneath him, breaking through the thin concrete layer, grabbing his ankle and yanking him down forcefully.
The change happened too quickly; Zhang Binyu was caught off guard.
Tong Sui, standing closest, immediately realized what was happening. He raised the long knife in his hand and swung it fiercely, severing the greenish hand.
Zhang Binyu fell to the ground, panic-stricken as he looked at the hand still gripping his leg.
He kicked with his other foot.
The severed hand dropped to the floor, and he scrambled backwards.
“What kind of monster is this?”
Tong Sui’s hand, holding the long knife, trembled; he fixed his gaze on the severed hand, ensuring it was no longer moving before looking down at the broken ground.
If he guessed correctly, this was the beginning of the zombies’ mutation and evolution.
As the apocalypse progressed, the zombies’ running speed would increase, and their jumping distance would also widen.
Not only would the zombies become more powerful, but even crops and animals would exhibit stronger mutations.
At that moment, Tong Sui felt the ground beneath his feet starting to tremble.
He took a step back.
Sure enough, the next second, the ground shifted, and a zombie poked its head out, aiming to grab Tong Sui’s foot.
Without hesitation, Tong Sui swung the long knife, hearing the whoosh of the air and thick fluids spraying out, the dark green brain matter splattering onto the lead-gray ground.
A strong stench surged forth.
Tong Sui covered his mouth and nose in disgust, bending over as he felt his stomach churn.
It was too nauseating.
No matter how many times he faced this, he would always be sickened by that rotten smell.
Jiang Hua used the crowbar to pull out the zombie’s entire torso.
He frowned.
The zombie before him was somewhat different from the ones they had encountered before, the most obvious difference being that its arm muscles were exceptionally developed. The fingers had also evolved into sharper, tougher claws.
No wonder it could even dig through concrete.
Seeing this, Zhang Binyu felt a chill run down his back.
He was wearing combat boots, and the zombie had left several clear claw marks on his shoes.
If Tong Sui hadn’t reacted in time, he would have been finished today.
