The bullets were always limited.
Tong Sui climbed up to the second-floor window and leaned out to take a look.
If he stepped onto the air conditioning unit and climbed down along the water pipe, he should be able to safely jump onto the lawn.
On the fourth floor of the mall, Wang Tao surveyed the multitude of books and asked, “Captain Hua, do we need to collect all these books? He can’t possibly read them all by himself.”
Jiang Hua nodded.
Wang Tao was taken aback.
Fine.
If it were anyone else, he would think it was absurd to do this, but since it was Jiang Hua…
Space was limited.
There wasn’t even enough room for food, let alone so many useless books.
Moreover, Tong Sui looked only in his teens or early twenties; if he could find a cure for zombies by himself, what were all those PhD professors doing?
Wang Tao was more concerned with whether they could fill their bellies rather than those unproductive endeavors.
Just then, a loud noise erupted outside.
The entire building seemed to shake.
“What happened?”
Before Wang Tao could react, he noticed that Jiang Hua had vanished.
He hurriedly packed all the books into storage and rushed out of the mall in a panic.
Upon exiting, he saw the deep pit.
Wang Tao gasped; if someone got hit by that, it would mean certain death.
He Lan, pale-faced, exclaimed, “Captain Hua, Tong Sui went that way! Hurry and chase him; he lured the zombies away to save me!”
Jiang Hua’s expression turned cold as he took off in pursuit.
It was only then that He Lan collapsed to the ground in exhaustion.
Wang Tao, still trying to grasp the situation, heard her curse, “Damn it. Let me find out which construction team is behind this sign.”
Tong Sui, crouched on the window sill, fired repeatedly at the zombies until he exhausted his remaining bullets, then he tossed the handgun away.
He held onto the window, one foot already dangling outside, resting on the air conditioning unit.
Jiang Hua stepped on the bloodied shards of glass, his expression darkening as he surveyed the fallen zombies. It was as if he were witnessing a once-desired crystal ball shattering again right before him.
Electricity crackled in the air.
By the time Jiang Hua reached the second floor, Tong Sui was about to leap down.
His pupils constricted.
Several dazzling white lightning bolts struck simultaneously, causing all the zombies to collapse, motionless.
This ability was controlled with extreme precision, not injuring Tong Sui even slightly; even the splattering green brain matter did not touch him.
Tong Sui froze in his movements.
He stared blankly as Jiang Hua walked through the filthy corpses and slightly bent down to hold him.
A hot, strong hand gripped his palm.
Leaning against Jiang Hua’s chest, Tong Sui quietly listened to the beating of his heart, thumping away. After a long time, he finally asked uncertainly, “Were you specifically here to save me?”
“Yeah,” Jiang Hua replied, “Are you hurt?”
“No.”
Tong Sui jumped down and turned around to show him, “He Lan gave me a gun, but I ran out of bullets.”
Jiang Hua seized his hand, “How did you get this injury?”
“I bit myself.”
Tong Sui removed the ring from his finger, “I just found this; it connects to a secondary space, like a spatial ability.”
He demonstrated to Jiang Hua, pulling out the fan he had placed inside earlier.
Jiang Hua’s gaze darkened slightly.
Items with special properties were definitely treasures.
“You just tell me this, not worried I might come for you over this ring?”
But Tong Sui took his hand and placed it firmly in Jiang Hua’s palm, “Here, this is for you.”
Jiang Hua looked puzzled, “Why give it to me?”
“Because you saved me so many times.”
In Jiang Hua’s world, there was no sharing; one had to take what one wanted through one’s own efforts.
It was even more so in the apocalypse.
Their team had encountered several reckless ability users who had attempted to rob them.
Jiang Hua had shown no mercy, beating them all up and confiscating their supplies.
Yet Tong Sui never guarded against him; as long as he didn’t mention the ring, Jiang Hua would never know.
Jiang Hua fell silent for a moment.
He raised his hand, took the ring, and pressed it onto Tong Sui’s delicate, pale fingers.
“I don’t need it; you should keep it.”
Jiang Hua recalled that Tong Sui might innocently mention the ring to others. If anyone became greedy, it could lead to hidden troubles.
So he said, “Don’t tell anyone about this except me.”
Tong Sui obediently nodded, “Okay.”
Jiang Hua then picked Tong Sui up and stepped over the fallen zombies and shattered glass.
“The ground is too dirty; it’s easy to get hurt.”
The other teammates who had been waiting breathed a sigh of relief upon seeing them return.
“That’s great! I knew Captain Hua would be fine!”
“Lan Jie, you can rest easy now.”
Only Jian Lexian clenched his fists in secret, shocked that they had come back unscathed.
Jiang Hua coldly swept his gaze over everyone present, and once he confirmed everyone was accounted for, he turned to Wang Tao, “Did you pack up those books?”
Wang Tao nodded.
Jiang Hua set Tong Sui down, “Go check if there are any books you want.”
Tong Sui exclaimed in excitement, “Okay!”
With books, he could finally begin to research what the so-called zombie antidote was all about.
After Tong Sui walked away, Jiang Hua approached the fallen sign, running his fingers over the neatly cut seams.
His expression deepened slightly.
He raised his head and coldly said, “Jian Lexian, come here.”
